Spanish, known as español or lengua española in Latin America and Castilian (lengua castellana) in Spain, is a Romance language of the Indo-European language family. Developed from colloquial Latin spoken on the Iberian Peninsula of Europe, it is now a global language with 474.7 million native speakers mainly located in the Americas and Spain. Spanish serves as an official language in 20 countries and is notable as the world’s second-most spoken native language after Mandarin Chinese; the fourth most spoken overall after English, Mandarin Chinese and Hindustani (Hindi-Urdu); and the most widely used Romance language. Mexico has the largest population of native Spanish speakers.

Spanish belongs to the Ibero-Romance family of languages, which began to form from several dialects of Vulgar Latin in Iberia following the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century. The oldest Latin documents containing aspects of Spanish are from northern Iberia in the 9th century, and systematic writing in the language first occurred in Toledo, a famous city of Castile, during the 13th century. Spanish colonization during early modern times was also responsible for bringing it to many overseas regions, particularly to America.
